Boston’s Sexiest 2010

Beth Ladew

Beth Ladew AKA Ms. Thang

(Boston Housemusic Coalition / Ca$H 4 Gold)

This club queen rules the dance floor: the turntables are her scepter, and her headphones are her crown. But when giving our ears the royal treatment, Ladew (Ms Thang, if you’re nasty) looks as good as she sounds – a sight to behold, plus pure aural pleasure.

Some female DJs say the industry is “a man’s world.” Thoughts? I suppose I agree for the most part. It still isn’t very common to see women spinning…. One advantage is getting booked based on being a woman. People like to see a hot chick in the booth…. I definitely had some haters when I first entered the scene, and maybe I still do, but at this point I could care less. I’m so used to men asking, “Are you really mixing?” or “Are you the DJ?” I’m like, “No, sweetie. I’m just standing here with headphones on, pretending.” I know that doesn’t happen to male DJs.

What music gets you in the mood? Silence is golden. I wanna hear your heartbeat.

True or false: you can tell how “sexy” people are by how they dance. False. I knew this guy: worst dancer ever! He wasn’t exactly impressing me with his moves. But behind closed doors … whoa. Different story.

Do you get hit on while spinning? Almost never. It’s like there’s an invisible force field around the DJ booth…. Occasionally, some drunk guy asks if I can give him private lessons. I just tell him he can’t afford me and send him on his way. I’m working!

MALCOLM MC CLAREN DIES AT AGE 64

Malcolm McLaren

1946 -2010

Former Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren has died aged 64, it has been confirmed. McLaren had been suffering from cancer and passed away in the morning (April 8) in New York.

Born in 1946 in London and raised by his grandmother in Newington Green in the North London area of the city, after his war-deserter father left home when he was two. McLaren studied at Art Schools St. Martin’s College Of Art and Goldsmiths College.

He achieved the notoriety he sought – and which never left him – when the band’s anti-establishment single “God Save The Queen”, released during the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Celebration, was banned from the airwaves by the BBC and the Independent Broadcasting Authority. 10th March 1977: The Sex Pistols with their manager Malcolm McLaren signing a new contract with A&M Records, after being dropped from EMI, outside Buckingham Palace, London. After having been expelled from several Art Colleges, he opened a Clothes Shop on the King’s Road Before managing the Sex Pistols, from 1975 to 1977. McLaren ran Let It Rock. A Clothing Store in London, with designer and then-partner/girlfriend Vivienne Westwood. The shop became a focal point of the fledgling punk movement. The shop was later re-named Too Fast To Live Too Young To Die, and then, most famously, SEX. The couple’s son, Joe Corre, went on and founded the lingerie company Agent Provocateur. It was here that he first encountered a young John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten and auditioned for the role of Sex Pistols‘ frontman, miming to an Alice Cooper record on the jukebox. “For me Malc was always entertaining, and I hope you remember that. Above all else he was an Entertainer and I will miss him, and so should you.” McLaren also worked with the New York Dolls shortly before launching the Sex Pistols.Malcolm McLaren with his former wife, the fashion designer Vivienne Westwood

McLaren also took part in several of his own musical projects, releasing the first of his own albums ‘Duck Rock’ in 1983, and having UK hits with the likes of ‘Buffalo Gals’, ‘Double Dutch’ and ‘Madame Butterfly’. He also worked closely with Bow Wow Wow and Adam And The Ants. He went on to release albums throughout the 1980s, ’90s and ’00s, most recently last year’s ‘Shallow – Musical Paintings’.

Writer Jon Savage, who wrote punk biography ‘England’s Dreaming’, said McLaren was a “Revolutionary”! “He could be very charming, he could be very cruel, but he mattered and he put something together that was extraordinary. What he did with fashion and music was extraordinary. He was a Revolutionary!.” John Lydon said:

In later life McLaren hinted that he may run for Mayor Of London (he never officially launched a campaign), and signed up to appear on reality TV show ‘I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of here!’, though he never actually appeared on the show.

He died in hospital in Switzerland with his partner, 37-year-old Korean- American Young Kim by his bedside, along with his son Joe Corre. Ms Kim told The Independent: “We were there with him when he passed away. He was diagnosed with cancer in October. He was very active until the end of February when his tumor became very aggressive. He just went very quickly. McLaren had kept his illness quiet. In February he had traveled to New York in February for the launch of an art book before returning to Switzerland to be treated at a clinic. He said he wanted to be buried at Highgate Cemetery. We are now taking steps to try to make that happen.” McLaren‘s body is now set to be flown to London to be buried in Highgate Cemetery.

Miss Westwood said: “When we were young and I fell in love with Malcolm, I thought he was beautiful and I still do. I thought he was a very charismatic, special and talented person. We hadn’t been in touch for a long time. The thought of him dead is really something very sad.”
